It's easy to put on a few extra pounds over the winter months. Maybe you're not quite as active during the colder months as you are when it begins to warm up. We also tend to eat foods that are a bit heavier. Then there are the holidays. It begins with Halloween and all that candy, Thanksgiving when we stuff ourselves with turkey and pumpkin pie, endless December festivities which almost all include wonderful, decadent goodies. We wrap up the year with an incredible New Years party that says goodbye to the old and hello to the new, and we say it with food and drink. Is it any wonder that some of us meet Summer with a little work to do before putting on that bathing suit?
You can be feeling great and begin loosing those excess pounds in no time by implementing some easy-to-do eating habits. Never skip breakfast. You need it to get your metabolism going first thing in the morning. Make it healthy. One with fiber, lean protein, low sugar, low carb. Oatmeal with low fat milk and a serving of fruit is a perfect way to start the day. An egg with a slice of whole wheat toast and grapefruit sections is another ideal breakfast. If you enjoy fish, have it for breakfast. It's a wonderful, lean protein. Whole grains last, maintaining a feeling of fullness.
Drink water. If you used to do this and stopped, get back into the habit. But try something a little different. Drink a full glass of water before each meal. Not only will the water flush your system of excess fluid as always, but it will also give you a feeling of fullness, reducing your tendency to overeat. If you like, add some lemon to your water, it gives it a fresh taste and adds no calories.
The next tip may sound obvious, but it's critical. STOP EATING JUNK FOOD!! Replace salty, greasy snacks like chips and pretzels with raw vegetables and air-popped popcorn. Stop going to fast-food restaurants. Especially when you are first trying to jump
start your weight loss. Those double cheeseburgers and french fries are certainly not figure friendly. Replace them with chicken or fish and fresh vegetables. Heat that barbecue up and grill your protein and veggies, they're delicious. You may never go back to fried food again.
Carbs are not your friend, cut way back. If pasta is something you can't live without, limit the frequency and quantity. And, change to one of the whole wheat pastas that are on the market, they're good and much better for you. The same with any bread you include in you daily food. Limit the quantity and switch to whole grain. A little is Okay. Remember your food pyramid and eat accordingly.
Don't like the word "exercise"? A lot of people feel the same way because of their attitude. Looking at it as a chore instead of something enjoyable is part of the problem. Everyone has something they enjoy doing. Dancing, walking, yoga, swimming. Whatever your enjoyable movement is, allow yourself the time to enjoy it once every day. Treat yourself. Take time for yourself. Reward yourself. Don't look at taking that walk as a chore, look at it as an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and tone your body.
