People with
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are not always prone to panic attacks, for example, and do not necessarily fear social situations. GAD usually includes subtler symptoms, such as excessive worry about things like work, family, health or money, and can be accompanied by physical symptoms that include muscle twitching, headaches, sweating, or gastrointestinal trouble.
The National Institute of Health classifies a specific symptom of GAD as being excessive worry or anxiety occurring more days than not for at least a six month period. Many who experience this can begin to feel frustrated and helpless, but there are a variety of successful treatments and therapy that can help restore patients to a normal life.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder is the most difficult of the anxiety disorders to diagnose because it lacks many of the more dramatic symptoms of other disorders.
Apart from the general physician there are people like psychologists, counselors, and at times even the psychiatrists. These professionals implement various methods and techniques to treat a person suffering from anxiety disorder. There are methods like hypnotism, verbal counseling, and finally medication if the situation worsens immensely then there is no way apart from medicines like Xanax. At first the effort of every physician or counselor is to treat you without putting on medication. They try various other alternative therapies to make you free from anxiety. Sometimes there are social workers and psychologists who work in close connection with the psychiatrists.
The traditional way to treat anxiety used to be with anxiolytics, which were anti anxiety agents. Today while these anti anxiety drugs are still used there are other methods that are also used. For many people however, treating their excessive anxiety with anti anxiety drugs is the most proven way of reducing their symptoms and allowing them to lead normal lives.
The most popular anxiolytics today is Benzodiazepines, and most popular from these is
alprazolam (Xanax) and diazepam (Valium)
It usually takes about 20 minutes for benzodiazepines to kick in, and they strong enough to stop and even full blown panic attack. The main drawbacks of these medications are that if you take too much, they can make you tired, and if you take them everyday, you might get used to them after 1-3 months (i.e. they might stop working). In addition, people with a history of addiction problems can get addicted to these medications (although in general, they produce a pretty weak high, so it's exceedingly rare for a non-addict to become addicted to these drugs).
Another type of anti anxiety medication used is that of
SSRIs or serotonin-specific reuptake inhibitors. These belong in the class of antidepressant drugs. The brand names that are given include
Zoloft,
Prozac,
Paxil,
Lexapro and others. These SSRIs have milder forms of side effects than that of the usual anti anxiety drugs, and there is also less chance of becoming dependent upon these drugs. The main drawback to SSRIs is that you must take them continuously for up to three to five weeks before any sign of improvement begins to show.
